About the Intrapsychic Humanism Society
The Intrapsychic Humanism Society sponsors Professional Development Programs for mental health professionals suitable to all stages of clinical training. We offer continuing education credits for psychologists, social workers, and professional counselors through our license (159000797) as a Continuing Education Sponsor of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
The Society also offers Public Lectures applying the principles of Intrapsychic Humanism to contemporary issues in diverse fields, including early child development, education, parenting, child welfare, self-help, business, and social decision making.
The Intrapsychic Humanism Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit membership organization with a mission to offer learning opportunities to promote the application of the theory’s groundbreaking principles in both our professional and personal lives.
Nondiscrimination Policy
The Intrapsychic Humanism Society does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. We will not tolerate unlawful discrimination or harassment of any kind.
In our primary mission at the Intrapsychic Humanism Society providing programs to promote the ongoing professional development of psychotherapists, we are committed to furthering their actualization of the ideals to become more fully available to all the unique experiences and feelings of the individuals under their care. We are committed as well to supporting mental health professionals in becoming ever more aware of invisible personal motives and identifications, including those that are race related, which might limit this availability and interfere with their therapeutic motives. In so doing, we strive to support therapists in providing relief for their patients’ emotional pain and in furthering their patients’ development of inner happiness and self-caretaking in order to create secure, satisfying lives.
A Brief History of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society
The Intrapsychic Humanism Society was founded in 2002, but the seeds of the organization were planted soon after the publication of the Piepers’ seminal book, Intrapsychic Humanism: An Introduction to a Comprehensive Psychology and Philosophy of Mind (1990). At that time, a group of mental health professionals interested in the theory formed a weekly study group to read the book together. They came to decide they wanted to share the ideas and ideals of Intrapsychic Humanism with a broader audience and formed our current nonprofit membership organization to sponsor continuing education programs.
The founding president of the Society was Mark L. Steinberg, Ph.D. Walter Miller, LCSW, was another founding Board member whose passion for the ideas and ideals of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society was a key driving force in the development and growth of the Society. Under Dr. Steinberg’s leadership, the Society actualized its mission of offering multiple public presentations every year, listed in our Program Archive. When Dr. Steinberg retired, Dr. Katheine Knight took over the leadership of the Society as Interim President until 2018, when the current President, Patricia Walker, Ph.D., was elected.
Under Dr. Walker’s leadership, the Society began offering virtual live webinars in place of in-person programs in response to the COVID pandemic. These virtual webinars form the majority of our On Demand Webinars. In 2022, an ongoing seminar series was launched, the Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D. Seminar Series: Intrapsychic Humanism Core Concepts and Clinical Applications, and we now offer three years of this seminar series On Demand. We created our new website in 2025 in order to offer all our programs On Demand.
In 2022, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society at a Garden Party at the Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool. Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper gave The William J. Pieper, M.D. Lecture, A History of the Origins and Evolution of Intrapsychic Humanism, which is available as an On Demand Webinar.
