Listening and Responding to Children’s Learning Motivations: Exploring the Pedagogy of Reggio Emilia in Chicago Inner-City Preschool Settings

A Lecture by: Daniel R. Scheinfeld, Ph.D. - Friday, April 13, 2007 Dr. Scheinfeld will describe how an early childhood program serving inner-city children and families in Chicago has been exploring an approach to preschool education that was developed in Reggio Emilia, Italy and continues to flourish there. The essential features of this pedagogy, “The Emergent Curriculum,” refers to the teachers’ process of listening and responding daily to the children’s interests and ideas as the basis of their curriculum. The presentation will describe this learning process and teacher support in this educational model. Dr. Scheinfeld is a Senior Research Associate at the Erikson Institute of Chicago. Much of his career has focused on development projects in Chicago public schools and ethnographic studies of educational settings.
